The digital collection Ära Kaiser Franz Joseph I 1830-1916 [The Era of Emperor Franz Joseph 1830-1916] has been created by the Österreichisches Staatsarchiv in Vienna. Around some twenty themes you can follow the life of the Austrian emperor and developments in Vienna and the Habsburg Empire well into the First World War, each of them with relevant archival records or other objects, for example books or images of cultural events. There are six maps of the Habsburg Empire for decisive years accompanied with typical portraits. The collection contains also a bibliography concerning Franz Joseph. This digital collection is only accessible in German.

La Grande Collecte

Logo La Grande CollecteThe digital project La Grande Collecte [The Great Collect] was an initiative in 2013 and 2014 launched by the Bibliothèque nationale de France, the Archives de France and the Mission Centenaire 1914-1918. In this crowdsourcing project the aim was inviting the general public to bring sources from their private collections to the regional archives in order to digitize and publish them on a separate online platform. You can use the free text search field to search the results at will, use an advanced search mode (Recherche avancée) or filter them by the type of document (official publications, correspondence, diaries, photographs and drawings). In its present state this digital collections contains for these categories only a few dozen examples; there are some 130 photographs. The collection can only be accessed in French.

In 2018 the number of items is still relatively low, with for example 300 postcards and 200 photographs.

Wartime Canada

Wartime CanadaThe portal Wartime Canada has been created by a team of the University of Western Ontario as an educational resource for teaching the history of Canada during both World Wars by using documents and artifacts to get closer to actual experiences. The resources at this portal are organized by ten category headings with a verb, such as Fighting, EatingRelaxingRemembering and Worshipping. The selection of themes under these headings is very wide and instructive. The section on education gives guidance to larger subjects such as the war effort, government and economy, identity and culture, historical inquiry and society. For each theme you can set the selection of items to either the First or the Second World War by choosing this period from a dropdown box. The portal can be visited in English and French.

Patrimoine numérique

Logo Patrimoine numériqueThe French portal Patrimoine numérique (Digital Heritage) helps you to find digital collections created by French cultural institutions, covering archives, libraries, museums, archeological and audiovisual collections. Patrimoine numérique is the French branch of the MICHAEL-Culture network. The portal presents more than 3,000 digital collections from well over 900 institutions. A simple search for grande guerre yields 26 collections as a result; a similar search for 1914-1918 brings you more than 100 results. There is a dossier thématique about the Grande Guerre which brings you swiftly to fifteen digital collections. The dossier has also a link to all relevant collections (Toutes les collections numérisées), with as a result ninety collections. You can also use the advanced search mode. The portal can be viewed in French, English and Italian.

Europeana 1914-1918

Logo Europeana1418Europeana 1914-1918 is a portal project of Europeana, itself a digital portal, too, to bring together resources, both texts and images from all corners of Europe. Special attention is given to materials hitherto hidden away or especially brought to attention for this portal by the general public. Among the documents are letters, diaries, photographs (including stereographs, mostly from the Imperial War Museums), official documents, films, sound recordings and postcards. One of the strong new features is the integration of materials from Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States. You can also search for the various fronts. Europeana 1914-1918 had in 2014 an interface in fifteen languages, currently (2018) you can choose from 27 languages.

The films available at the European Film Gateway 1914 can be found here, too. Collections from many European libraries and other cultural heritage institutions are also present at the portal Europeana Collections 1914-1918.
