Mission Centenaire 1418

Logo Centenaire 1418The French portal Mission Centenaire 1418 is a project of the French government and a number of major French cultural institutions. The portal has three sections. The first section focuses on the commemorative events in France and elsewhere, the second section presents French (digital) collections and subjects concerning the First World War, including many special subjects and rare material (Trésors des archives) and the third section deals with current scholarly work on the First World War, its place in education and society.

The section with digital collections is particular strong, especially for privately held collections. Apart from these section there are an event calendar and a section with videos and presentations. The sheer range of materials in the showcases is most impressive, for example for stereoscopic photographs (search for stéréoscopiques), however without animated versions which sometimes are present at the website of the holding institution. The portal can be visited in French, English and German.

The collection of 886 stereoscopic photographs taken by Marcel Chatenay will be digitized and put online in 2015 at the website of the Archives municipales in Saumur.
